Top golfer Jason Day to skip Olympics over Zika
Another golfer has pulled out of the Olympics over fears about the Zika virus. Jason Day, the sport’s No. 1 player, said he based his decision on he and his wife’s desire for more children. “I have always placed my family in front of everything else in my life,” the 28-year-old Australian said. Day and his wife just had their second child in November. Zika can cause severe birth defects in babies whose mothers contract the virus during pregnancy. But it also can be transmitted sexually, and it’s not clear how long the virus may cause problems. Brazil, which is hosting this summer’s Games, has been hardest hit of all countries suffering from the Zika outbreak. Three of the world’s top 10 golfers announced they will not compete in this year’s Games, the first year to include golf since 1904.
