Thousands of explosives found at Cambodian school

Officials kept the Queen Kossamak high school in the northeastern province of Kratie temporarily closed on Monday after authorities found thousands of pieces of unexploded ordnance on the school’s grounds. Over the weekend, authorities dug up more than 2,000 grenades and other pieces of unused ammunition.

How did those explosives get there? Officials say the school served as an ammunition storage site during Cambodia’s civil war, which ended in 1975. The country is one of the most bombed and mined countries in the world, and accidents from unexploded ordnance have killed more than 20,000 people since the end of the war.
