Terrorists bomb Catholic Mass in Philippines
Islamic State on Sunday claimed responsibility for the bombing of a Catholic Mass that took place in a university gymnasium in the city of Marawi. The attack killed at least four people and wounded about 50 more. Authorities said some of the wounded were in critical condition. Investigators said the attackers built the bomb from a mortar artillery round.
What motivated the attack? Islamic State affiliates have remained active in the region in recent years. The Philippine military recently carried out operations against militants in the area that support Islamic State. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Sunday issued a statement condemning the attack and calling those who perpetrate terrorist attacks against innocent people enemies of society.
