Suspected Strasbourg accomplice charged
A French court on Monday handed down terror charges against a man suspected of supplying the gun to the shooter who killed five people near the Strasbourg Christmas market last week. A judge charged the man, whom police have not identified, with criminal association with terrorists and possessing and supplying arms in connection with a terror enterprise. On Dec. 11, Cherif Chekatt, 29, used the weapon to open fire on people near the market. He died in a shootout with police in Strasbourg on Thursday after an international manhunt. Two other suspects remain in custody.
A fifth victim in the attack, a 36-year-old Polish man named Barto Orent-Niedzielski, died in a Strasbourg hospital on Sunday. Orent-Niedzielski reportedly fought the shooter and stopped him from entering a crowded club, possibly preventing more deaths. Other casualties included an Italian journalist and a Thai tourist.
