Supreme Court sides with Trump, keeps travel rules the same

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration late Tuesday to reinstate some of its restrictions on refugees. Last week, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals broadened the ban’s exemption list and said Trump could not block refugees whom U.S. resettlement agencies had already vetted and accepted. Trump asked the Supreme Court to block the ruling, and Tuesday night Justice Anthony Kennedy issued a temporary stay, barring 24,000 pending refugees from entering the United States. The president first ordered a ban on travel to seven terror-prone nations and a temporary pause on the U.S. refugee program in January. After courts blocked the ban from going into effect, Trump issued a new version in March that reduced the number of banned nations to six. This is the third time the court has intervened in the matter since June. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments to rule on the order’s constitutionality on Oct. 10.
