Sudan floods death toll reaches 83
Brig. Gen. Abdul-Jalil Abdul-Rahim said Tuesday that at least 36 people had been injured in flash floods during the rainy season that started in June. He also added that more than 18,200 homes had been destroyed, and over 25,600 houses had been damaged. The United Nations estimates that over 146,200 people have been displaced by floods. Authorities have declared emergencies in a third of the country’s provinces.
What’s being done to help? Two flights from Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center carrying 100 tons of aid materials were sent to Sudan on Tuesday. UN agencies have faced funding shortages and have received $608 million—only a third of what is required for this year. As such, their response to the crisis has been hampered. Meanwhile, the country hasn’t had a functioning government since October, when a military coup toppled the democratic government established in 2019 after a popular uprising removed longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir.
