Steve Wynn resigns from casino empire
WASHINGTON—Billionaire Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn resigned as head of Wynn Resorts, the corporation announced Tuesday. The decision comes after a Wall Street Journal report last month detailed accounts of sexual harassment from dozens of Wynn employees. The accusations go back decades and include an alleged $7.5 million settlement to silence one employee who said Wynn pressured her to have sex with him. Last month, Wynn decided to part ways with the Republican National Committee (RNC), where he served as finance chairman. Wynn has denied any wrongdoing but said in a statement he decided to step aside from his company because “an avalanche of negative publicity” had created an unsustainable environment. “It is with a collective heavy heart, that the board of directors of Wynn Resorts today accepted the resignation of our founder, CEO, and friend Steve Wynn,” non-executive director of the board Boone Wayson said in a statement Tuesday. “He played the pivotal role in transforming Las Vegas into the entertainment destination it is today.” Matt Maddox, who has been president of Wynn Resorts since 2013, will take over as chairman and CEO.The RNC has said it will not return any of Wynn’s money until an investigation is complete.
