U.S. Space Command to remain in Colorado Springs

President Joe Biden on Monday reversed a decision by the Trump administration in 2021 to relocate the command to Huntsville, Alabama. The military in 2019 established U.S. Space Command and gave it a temporary headquarters in Colorado while the Air Force evaluated potential permanent sites. Some Air Force officials backed the plan to move the headquarters to Alabama, while head of Space Command General James Dickinson has said relocating would disrupt military readiness. Colorado Springs is also the home of the Air Force Academy, which trains Space Force guardians.

How did Alabama politicians react? Some lawmakers from the state said Biden’s decision was motivated by politics. House Armed Services Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Ala., said he would open a congressional investigation into the decision. Alabama scored higher than Colorado in a formal assessment of potential locations and is home to the Army’s Space and Missile Defense command.
