South Korean fighter pilots on Thursday accidentally dropped eight bombs on a village near Seoul, seriously injuring two people during a live-fire exercise. One was a 60-year-old woman who underwent surgery for shrapnel in her neck. Thirteen other people, including five soldiers, sustained minor injuries. The bombs struck a church, greenhouse, and seven civilian homes in the inland village of Pocheon, the Korea Herald reported.
The bombing was intended to occur in a designated training area as part of a joint United States-South Korea drill, ahead of the 2025 Freedom Shield military exercise scheduled to kick off next week.
A South Korean Air Force official said a fighter jet pilot entered the wrong coordinates for the drop, and then failed to verify them. The other jet pilot followed the first according to standard procedure.
What type of bombs were dropped? The misplaced bombs were MK-82s, which each weighed about 500 pounds. They are one of the most commonly airdropped weapons in the world and are typically used to produce maximum explosive effects.
