Gunman opens fire on Georgia airbase, injures five soldiers

Update, 6 p.m., 8/6/2025: Officials identified the alleged shooter as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, accused of injuring five fellow soldiers at Fort Stewart on Wednesday morning. The five injured soldiers are hospitalized and their conditions have stabilized, Brig. Gen. John Lubas said during a Wednesday afternoon update. Three required surgeries. They are all expected to recover. Radford served on base as an automated logistics sergeant assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team and has never been deployed to combat, Lubas said.

Radford allegedly used a personal handgun in the attack, Lubas added. The attack was cut short when nearby soldiers stepped in and tackled the shooter, he continued. Officials could not speak to the suspect’s motives but did confirm that Radford received a DUI recently, which the chain of command was previously unaware of. Radford had no previous behavioral issues on base, and he will remain in pre-trial confinement, Lubas said.

Shooter injures five soldiers on Georgia airbase

Five soldiers were shot late Wednesday morning when a suspect opened fire on base at the Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield in southeastern Georgia. The installation was locked down after shots rang out around 11 a.m., according to an afternoon statement from the airbase. Officials arrested the alleged shooter around 11:30 a.m., and will release further information after an investigation is completed, the base said. Only the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team remains locked down on base for investigators to process the scene, according to the base.

What happened to the soldiers? The injured soldiers were treated on site and transported to the military’s Winn Army Community Hospital, according to the statement.

President Donald Trump has been briefed and will continue monitoring the situation, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday afternoon. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said he planned to stay in contact with law enforcement on the scene and asked the public to pray for the victims.
