Democrat Shapiro chosen as Pennsylvania’s governor
Democrat Josh Shapiro won Pennsylvania’s race for governor on Tuesday with 54.6 percent of the vote, according to preliminary results from The Associated Press. His challenger, Douglas Mastriano, garnered 43.6 percent of votes. During Mastriano’s campaign, he supported former President Donald Trump’s claims of election fraud. Incumbent Democratic Governor Tom Wolf had reached his term limit.
Who is Shapiro? Shapiro is from Philadelphia and has been Pennsylvania’s attorney general since 2016. He’s Jewish and a self-described populist. He has said that he will keep Pennsylvania’s current abortion laws that protect babies after 24 weeks of gestation with an exception to save the mother’s life or health. He has positioned himself as a public servant because of his Jewish faith.
