Severe weather continues north as Texas recovers
No fatalities have been reported after severe weather pummeled Kansas and Oklahoma on Sunday and into Monday. Footage shows homes from both states in pieces after several tornadoes blew through. The National Weather Service confirmed 13 twisters touched town in parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado. About 30 structures, including 10 homes, were damaged in Oklahoma, but only two injuries were reported, according to Oklahoma Emergency officials.
Kansas has not yet released information on injuries, but officials in central Kansas described considerable damage from storms. Many downed trees, blocked roads, and widespread power outages followed Sunday night’s storm, according to a social media post by the city of Newton. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly issued a state of disaster emergency proclamation on Monday morning as more storm systems are expected throughout the week.
How have other states fared from the severe weather? The death toll in Texas has risen to eight people after a severe weather system blew through the Gulf Coast on Friday night, according to officials. The Houston area experienced 100 mph winds along with twisters, leaving trails of broken glass, fallen trees, and downed power lines. Just over 195,000 Texas homes were still without power at the time of reporting, according to PowerOutage.us.
Where is the weather system heading now? The severe weather system is expected to continue moving through the Great Plains and into the Midwest, according to the NWS. Officials labeled the central plains with the highest risk for severe thunderstorms, accompanied by large hail, damaging wind gusts, and several potential tornadoes.
