Oklahoma tornadoes kill at least one, storms continue up through north
Several tornadoes touched down in Oklahoma on Monday night and into Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service, or NWS. Storms killed at least one person in the small northern town of Barnsdall, according to Osage County Sheriff Eddie Virden, who spoke to KOKI-TV. Dozens of homes in the county were also damaged, and a nursing home was evacuated, the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management said. Authorities also responded to a natural gas leak and numerous roadways blocked by debris. Other counties reported downed power lines, flash flooding, and more damaged buildings, officials said. Tens of thousands of Oklahomans were also left without power from the storms.
How are recovery efforts? The Red Cross opened a shelter for Barnsdall residents and other northeastern Oklahomans affected by the storm. Shelters for other residents are open in the southern counties of Murray and Carter. State Gov. Kevin Stitt intends to visit Barnsdall on Tuesday afternoon. Stitt added that resources are being directed to the area to aid in recovery.
Are the storms over or just moving? The NWS also issued tornado warnings for several areas of eastern Missouri and northwest Arkansas early Tuesday morning. Severe thunderstorms are expected over parts of Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon, according to the NWS Weather Prediction Center. Areas of the central Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valleys may face tornadoes, severe rain, and hail. Areas of Indiana will also see severe weather on Wednesday, according to the NWS.
