Several injured after train car fire at Penn Station
A New Jersey Amtrak train caught fire in a Hudson River Tunnel Friday morning, injuring several people and causing significant travel delays. The New York City Fire Department was called to the intersection of West 31st Street and 8th Avenue sometime around 1:30 a.m. local time. Service halted at the nearby Penn Station, causing delays for NJ Transit and Long Island Rail Road commuters.
What happened? Two train cars clashed, tripping the electrical system and sparking a fire in the tunnel, MTA CEO Janno Lieber told reporters at a Friday news conference. An emergency response was called at 1:30 a.m. when the smoke grew black, according to a report by local station WNBC, citing the New York City Fire Department. An engine ignited and blew up in flames and another fire team was called. Five workers have serious injuries and two people were severely hurt and taken to the hospital.
