Seven U.S. soldiers wounded in another insider attack in Afghanistan

An Afghan soldier wounded at least seven U.S. soldiers Saturday in an insider attack at Camp Shaheen in Mazar-e Sharif. Abdul Qahar Araam, a spokesman for the 209th Army Corps, said U.S. soldiers returned fire and killed the attacker. Gen. Dawlat Waziri, a spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry, also confirmed the incident. It was the second such insider attack by an Afghan soldier in the past week. Resolute Support, the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan, tweeted that it was “aware of the incident” and could “confirm there are no U.S. or NATO Resolute Support fatalities.” The statement added that one Afghan soldier was killed and another was wounded and that the incident is currently under investigation. In a statement sent to media, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid praised the attack but did not claim Taliban responsibility. Last week, an Afghan soldier killed three U.S. soldiers in eastern Nangarhar province. The Taliban claimed responsibility for that incident, saying the attacker had infiltrated the Afghan army “just to attack foreign forces.”
