Sessions questioned in Russia probe
WASHINGTON—Attorney General Jeff Sessions answered hours of questions from special counsel Robert Mueller’s team last week, the Justice Department confirmed Tuesday. Sessions’ cooperation with the investigation into possible Russia interference in the 2016 presidential election is the first known instance of a Cabinet member’s being questioned. Mueller assumed leadership of the Russia investigation shortly after President Donald Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey, a decision the president said at the time was based on a recommendation from Sessions. The attorney general was an early Trump supporter and the first U.S. senator to endorse him for president. Because of Sessions’ involvement with the Trump campaign in 2016, the attorney general recused himself from the Russia investigation, handing the authority to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. In the Oval Office on Tuesday, reporters asked the president if he’s concerned about what Sessions might have told Mueller. “No, I’m not at all,” Trump said. “I’m not at all concerned.” The president said he has not spoken to the attorney general about the interview.
