U.S. Secret Service personnel early on Sunday shot a man during an armed confrontation at the intersection of 17th St. NW and F St. NW, just west of the White House, the agency reported. Around midnight, officers approached the man, who brandished a firearm, according to the agency. They shot him in the ensuing standoff, and emergency services transported him to a local hospital. The man’s condition is currently unknown, as of Sunday’s statement. No Secret Service agents were injured, according to the agency.
Secret Service agents had tracked the gunman in response to a local police tip that a suicidal individual might be traveling from Indiana to Washington D.C. The capital’s Metropolitan Police Department is now investigating the incident.
Was President Donald Trump in the White House at the time? Trump was in Florida over the weekend, staying at his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach. While he was there, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, sent two fighter jets to intercept civilian planes violating restricted airspace over the residence. NORAD jets used flares to get pilots’ attention and escort them away from the no-fly zone. Since Trump’s inauguration, NORAD has responded to 20 airspace violations above Mar-a-Lago, the First Air Force reported.
