Scalise released from Washington hospital

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., left MedStar Washington Hospital Center on Tuesday to begin “intensive inpatient rehabilitation.” In a statement, hospital officials said Scalise “is in good spirits and is looking forward to his return to work once he completes rehabilitation.” Scalise suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound to the hip last month when a gunman attacked a Republican baseball practice in Virginia. Doctors performed several surgeries, both to repair the damage and control subsequent infections. They have not released any details about the extent of Scalise’s injuries or his expected condition after rehabilitation. Scalise surprised his colleagues Tuesday when he called into the weekly whip meeting, joking with them about whether they’d passed a healthcare reform package yet.
