Scalise, other baseball shooting victims continue to improve
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., and four others shot at a Republican congressional baseball practice last week continue to show signs of improvement. MedStar Washington Hospital Center upgraded Scalise’s condition to fair Wednesday, adding that he is making good progress. Scalise suffered a gunshot wound to his hip that caused severe internal bleeding. When he first arrived at the hospital, the 51-year-old lawmaker was in critical condition and faced what doctors called an “imminent risk of death.” After multiple surgeries, Scalise’s doctors now say he will begin an extended period of healing and rehabilitation. The other victims in the shooting are also improving. Crystal Griner, one of two Capitol Police officers wounded, threw out the first pitch at the congressional women’s softball game Wednesday night. Griner took a bullet in her ankle while defending lawmakers last week. David Bailey, the other wounded officer, is out of the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. GOP congressional staffer Zach Barth is back home with his family and recovering well from a gunshot wound to his calf. Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika remains hospitalized with a chest wound but his family said in a statement they expect him to make a full recovery.
