Scalise wins Republican nomination to be House speaker

In a 113-99 closed-door vote on Wednesday, Republicans nominated House Majority Leader Steve Scalise to be the next speaker of the House over his opponent, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan. Scalise now needs the backing of nearly all Republicans in the chamber for the simple majority to elect him to House speaker.

Will Scalise get enough votes on the floor? Although he won the nomination, some Republicans say they will still not support him. Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., said she would vote for Jordan on the House floor, as did Rep. Max Miller, R-Ohio. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy endured numerous rounds of voting on the floor earlier in the year before becoming speaker.
