Savannah Guthrie opens up in church video about missing mom
TheToday show co-anchor addressed her New York church on Sunday and discussed her struggle with faith after months of searching for her missing 84-year-old mother. Police believe Nancy Guthrie was forcibly taken from her southern Arizona home sometime in the early morning of Feb. 1. She has remained missing since. Savannah’s video address was released by Good Shepherd New York just before her on-screen Today appearance on Monday, the first since her mother’s disappearance.
What did her message include? Christians are taught to take comfort in knowing that Christ Jesus felt every type of human emotion and pain during His time on earth, Savannah explained. She described wrestling with God, struggling with feeling abandoned by Him, while still believing that Jesus truly felt this type of pain while on earth.
She added that it wasn’t wrong to challenge God with questions because He uses the vulnerability of our wrestling to share His truth and wisdom with us. Everyone is suspended in uncertainty, and Jesus knew that feeling, Savannah Guthrie said, citing Jesus’ cry from the cross of “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The power and meaning of the resurrection is diluted if we don’t acknowledge the pain, loss, and death that came before it, she stated. Savannah said she continues to believe in the resurrection.
Any updates on the search? The more than two-month search continued with few updates from state and federal investigators. Over a week into the investigation, the FBI released recovered footage of a masked person tampering with Nancy’s doorbell the morning of her disappearance. Investigators also searched at least one nearby residence and analyzed possible DNA linked to the crime without reporting any major breaks in the investigation. News outlets received alleged random notes addressed to the family, two of which Savannah believed to be legitimate.
