Missile falls in Poland during massive Russian attack on Ukraine
A Kh-101 cruise missile violated Polish airspace and fell 30 miles outside the town of Lublin overnight during Russia’s large-scale attack on Ukraine, according to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The missile was armed and was probably Russian, Tusk said. Polish forces were investigating the incident, and Tusk was keeping NATO and European leaders updated, he said.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that it had targeted military sites, including air bases and arms factories, according to the Associated Press.
Ukranian officals said that Russia fired more than 70 missiles, most of them ballistic, during its attack. Nearly 300 attack drones also targeted Ukraine, though President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said air defenses downed most of them. At least eight people were killed and dozens injured in strikes on residential buildings, including a couple and three of their children. The conditions of several more of their children and one grandchild were unknown, Zelenskyy said. He added that a critical shortage of air defense missiles from Ukraine’s partners led to more casualties.
Ukraine was aware of the impending Russian assault beforehand, Zelenskyy said. Ukraine attacked Russia overnight with hundreds of drones, according to Russian state-aligned media source TASS. Russian forces said they downed most of the drones, but Ukraine struck two warehouses belonging to popular retailer Wildberries, starting fires and injuring four people.
