Russia shoots down Ukrainian drone, officials say

Russian military officials said Monday that their forces shot down a Ukrainian drone headed for the Engels airbase deep in Russian territory. Debris from the downed drone killed three servicemen, according to Russian authorities. Russian media reported that four other people suffered injuries. The Engels airbase is almost 400 miles from Russia’s border with Ukraine.

What does Ukraine have to say about the incident? Ukraine has consistently refused to claim responsibility for attacks on Russian forces and infrastructure outside its borders. Still, Ukrainian air force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat acknowledged the incident, and called it a consequence of “Russian aggression.” Russia has suffered numerous attacks within its borders in the past month. On Monday, Ukraine called for a UN-moderated peace summit with Russia within two months.
