Roof of Mexican Catholic church collapses on baptism service

At least 10 people died Sunday afternoon when the roof caved in at a church in northern Mexico’s Ciudad Madero. The collapse happened during a baptism attended by about a hundred people. The rubble injured 60 people and trapped dozens. Search and rescue teams arrived at the site afterward and removed the wreckage with two cranes.

Why did the roof collapse? The cause of the collapse was not immediately clear on Monday morning. “Structural failures” were a probable cause of the collapse, according to the BBC. The roof came down on the congregation during Mass. It fell on pews in the church, allowing the possibility that anyone trapped could survive in air pockets, Red Cross officials said.
