Cook County Crime Stoppers on Sunday offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the indictment or arrest of any offenders behind a mass shooting the day before. An unknown shooter opened fire late Saturday evening on a large gathering in Washington Park on Chicago’s South Side, killing one person and wounding 14 others, according to the reward notice.
The nonprofit Crime Stoppers organization urged locals not to try to apprehend the suspected shooter, who it said should be considered armed and dangerous. Instead, it urged locals to submit anonymous tips.
Local news reported that the deceased victim was a 35-year-old man and that both men and women were among the injured. The shots appeared to have come from a location across the street from the park, witnesses said.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said Sunday that his administration was working to crack down on gun crime by stopping the flow of firearms into communities and by investing in prevention resources such as mental health support. He was staying in touch with the Chicago police department as it worked to hold accountable those who were responsible, he said.
