Report says Comey broke protocol but wasn’t biased
A report from the Justice Department’s inspector general faults former FBI Director James Comey for insubordination and breaking protocol but not political bias in the Hillary Clinton email investigation. The report also reveals more text messages between an FBI investigator and attorney that speak unfavorably of then–presidential candidate Donald Trump. “[Trump’s] not ever going to become president, right? Right?!” the lawyer, Lisa Page, wrote to Peter Strzok. “No. No he won’t. We’ll stop it,” Strzok responded. The report has not yet been made public, but multiple news outlets are already reporting on its contents ahead of its expected release Thursday afternoon. And politicians are seizing the opportunity to spin the report to their advantage: Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., called it a “damning indictment” of Comey and the Justice Department, while Democratic Reps. Jerrold Nadler of New York and Elijah Cummings of Maryland said the findings show that the FBI helped Trump win the election.
