Report: Abortion travel fell in 2025; Pill abortions rose
An estimated 142,000 people traveled across state lines to obtain an abortion in 2025, down from 154,000 the year before, according to a recently released report. The decline was mainly seen in states that completely protect unborn children from abortion, according to the Guttmacher Institute’s recent report on 2025 abortion statistics. However, those same states recorded a surge of roughly 20,000 more remotely prescribed abortions via drugs such as mifepristone. The pro-abortion institute advocated in its report for states to enact legal protections for the abortion drug.
Despite the drop in travel for abortions, the Guttmacher Institute said it found that New Mexico, Kansas, Virginia, North Carolina, and Illinois remained hotspots for out-of-state clients seeking abortions. About two-thirds of all abortions performed in New Mexico and Kansas were for women who lived elsewhere.
How many unborn children died from an abortion last year? The report estimated that medical professionals performed or prescribed drugs for about 1,126,000 abortions in the United States in 2025—slightly above the number for 2024. The estimate for last year marks the highest number of U.S. abortions since 2009, though it is below the roughly 1.6 million abortions recorded in 1990, according to the report.
