Rep. Jim Jordan campaigns for House speaker
Republicans voted in a closed-door meeting on Friday to nominate the conservative lawmaker from Ohio to replace former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and the preferred candidate of former President Donald Trump. Republicans previously nominated House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., for the speakership. Scalise withdrew when it became clear he didn’t have the votes needed to win on the House floor.
What does Jordan need to win? He needs 217 votes in the House. The GOP only has 221 seats. At least 55 Republicans voted against his nomination on Friday. The House is expected to vote this week—as early as Tuesday.
