Proud Boys members charged in Jan. 6 riot
The Justice Department indicted former chairman Henry “Enrique” Tarrio and four others with seditious conspiracy for allegedly coordinating an attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. All five men have already pleaded not guilty to crimes related to the U.S. Capitol riot, but this indictment adds more serious charges. Prosecutors argue the group’s goal was to stop Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s election. The men named in the indictment are scheduled to stand trial in August in federal court in Washington.
Will we learn more about Jan. 6? On Thursday, the House subcommittee investigating the Jan. 6 riot will livestream public hearings to begin sharing the results of its yearlong investigation. The panel’s members include seven Democrats and two Republicans, Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump. The public hearings will continue over several weeks to reveal information about the more than 1,000 people interviewed. Meanwhile, House Republicans are planning a news conference and media blitz to publicly dispute the work of the committee, which GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik of New York called a “sham political witch-hunt.”
