Prosecutors plan to refile charges against Alec Baldwin for movie set shooting
Actor Alec Baldwin’s case is scheduled to be brought before a grand jury before the end of the year. Prosecutors plan to charge him again with involuntary manslaughter for the October 2021 fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the western film Rust. It would be the second time Baldwin faces such a charge in connection with the shooting. In April, prosecutors dismissed an involuntary manslaughter charge against Baldwin, citing new evidence and a need for further investigation. Baldwin could face up to 18 months in prison if the case moves forward and he is convicted.
How did the shooting happen? In October 2021, Baldwin’s prop gun went off in a film rehearsal, killing Hutchins and wounding the director, Joel Souza. Baldwin, who is also a producer of the film, said he didn’t pull the trigger. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer on the set, has also been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
