Primaries underway in 14 states
Democratic candidates are battling for 1,357 delegates in Super Tuesday contests across the nation. They need 1,991 to secure the party’s nomination and face President Donald Trump in November.
What did the race look like going into Super Tuesday? Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont, led the delegate count with 60. Former Vice President Joe Biden followed just behind him with 54. Biden could gain some of the 33 delegates won by former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, both of whom dropped out of the race and endorsed him. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who is a distant third with eight delegates, said she would stay in the race for the long haul. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii also remains in the running, while former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg appears on ballots for the first time this primary season on Tuesday.
