President Trump wraps up G20 summit
As the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, came to a close Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump met with various world leaders and sought consensus with America’s Asian allies on how to deal with North Korea’s nuclear threat. “Something has to be done about it,” Trump said as he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi noted that “sensitive issues remain” in the China-U.S. relationship and more work needs to be done. In a separate meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Trump said the two were tackling “the problem and menace of North Korea.” Abe said he wanted to “demonstrate the robust partnership as well as the bonds” between Japan and the United States on the issue. Trade was also on the agenda during Trump’s Saturday meetings. “Many things have happened that have led to trade imbalances and we’re going to turn that around,” Trump said during the meeting with Xi, adding that he wanted a new arrangement with China that is “equitable” and “reciprocal.” In a meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May, Trump said the two countries were working on a trade agreement. Trump also had a brief, unscheduled meeting Saturday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the situation in Syria. Earlier in the day, Trump said he had a “tremendous meeting” with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday. Putin, in a news conference Saturday, said he thought Trump believed his in-person denials of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The final day of the summit also included the release of a statement from the G20 supporting the Paris climate agreement, which Trump opposes. The U.S. position was boxed off in a separate paragraph and German Chancellor Angela Merkel made it clear that the paragraph only applied to the United States. Trump flew back to Washington on Saturday evening.
