Polls open in fewer states

Ohio’s top health official called a halt to the state’s presidential primary just hours before voting would have begun. After a judge refused Gov. Mike DeWine’s request on Monday to delay in-person voting, state Health Director Amy Acton declared the election would expose voters and volunteers to an “unacceptable risk” of contracting the new coronavirus. She ordered polling places not to open. State election officials rescheduled the primary for June 2.

What about voting in other states? Arizona, Florida, and Illinois tried to keep calm and carry on with their primaries. Chicago officials scrambled late Monday to replace volunteer poll workers, many of whom were senior citizens and did not want to risk catching COVID-19 on primary election day. Some Florida polling places could not open because workers did not show up. Kentucky announced on Monday it will move its May 19 primary to June 23. Georgia and Louisiana have also postponed their primaries.
