Planned Parenthood unveils abortion pill stockpiling program
The abortion giant last week announced a new drug stockpiling program using mifepristone and misoprostol. Planned Parenthood’s “Just in Case Abortion Pills” program allows residents in Hawaii and Washington to stockpile the abortion drug before they become pregnant. The abortion provider said the program aims to ensure women have abortion drugs on hand in case they become pregnant. The program will allow them to take the drugs without first consulting an abortionist in person. The program could serve as a model for similar programs in other states, Planned Parenthood said. The announcement comes the same month a federal court briefly blocked abortion pills from being mailed without an in-person visit between a woman and an abortionist.
What do pro-lifers say about the program? The pro-life nonprofit Live Action expressed concern that Planned Parenthood’s program could endanger women. Live Action noted that the “Just in Case” program told women they could use the drugs as late as the 12th week of pregnancy. Yet the U.S Food and Drug Administration has only approved the abortion drug mifepristone for use up to 10 weeks into pregnancy, the pro-life group noted. Live Action warned that women might not know before getting the drugs that they could be susceptible to certain health risks from mifepristone.
How common is the use of abortion drugs? After Roe v. Wade was overturned by the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson ruling, states have been allowed to regulate abortion as they see fit. But since the ruling, the United States has seen an increase in overall abortions, reaching an estimated 1,126,000 in 2025, according to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute. An increasing proportion of abortions are now chemical abortions, accounting for 65% of all abortions in 2023 by Guttmacher’s count. Between October 2023 and September 2024, Planned Parenthood performed a record 434,450 abortions, according to its own records.
