PCA nominates Fred Greco as new stated clerk

Administrators for the Presbyterian Church in America, or PCA, earlier this month nominated a teaching elder to serve as the denomination’s next stated clerk, a key administrative post. The PCA Administrative Committee nominated Fred Greco, the senior pastor of Christ Church in Katy, Texas, to fill the role, according to a statement to WORLD from the committee. Greco’s nomination will face a vote of approval at the PCA’s 53rd General Assembly in June at Louisville, Ky. If approved, he will be the fifth stated clerk in the PCA’s history, according to byFaith, the official magazine of the denomination. The stated clerk helps to organize the work of the denomination and conducts official communications for the denomination, which has more than 400,000 members at nearly 2,000 congregations.

Who is Fred Greco? Greco grew up near Buffalo, N.Y., and studied classics and history at the University of Buffalo before earning a master’s degree in classics at the University of Chicago, according to Christ Church’s website. He later graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and married his wife, Deb, before having four children. He went on to practice law as a corporate attorney in Cleveland, Ohio. Greco eventually transitioned into a pastoring career, enrolling at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Miss., and becoming senior pastor of Christ Church in 2006.

What vacancy is he filling? Last June, Teaching Elder Bryan Chapell abruptly retired from his role as stated clerk, following a controversy involving a Post-It note. The controversy came days earlier, after Chapell held up a slip of paper during an interview on The Gospel Coalition’s Gospelbound podcast. The individuals whose names were on the list were “scandalizers” who had left their families, left the faith, or taken their own lives, Chapell said on the podcast. He later issued a public apology and retired from his position as the PCA’s stated clerk. Ruling Elder John Bise subsequently stepped into the role of interim stated clerk.
