One dead as Texas floodwaters continue to rise

At least one person has died as flash flood waves surged through the Texas Hill Country this week. The rain began on Monday, and as of Thursday evening, had not let up across much of the state.

How much rain has fallen so far? Some areas, such as Uvalde County, received up to 20 inches of rain since Monday, making up nearly half a year’s worth of rain in just a few days.

More than 8 inches fell in just six hours Thursday morning in Hunt, according to CNN Weather. Hunt is where last year’s Fourth of July floods swept through Camp Mystic, killing two counselors and 25 young campers. More than 130 died in the Texas Hill Country during that incident.

The heavy rainfall triggered the massive flood waves that took the life of at least one Texan. The United Cajun Navy, a volunteer emergency response organization, reported that multiple water rescues were underway Thursday morning. One river gauge along the Guadalupe River in Center Point showed a rise of 32 feet over just four hours, said CNN Weather. Other areas, such as Bulverde, have also experienced serious flooding.

Is more rain on the way? The river is predicted to crest at 35.6 feet in Comfort, which would put it on par with last year’s July Fourth floods, they added. The final scope of the flooding remains unclear, but another band of moderate-to-heavy rain is forecast to hit Texas and remain through at least Friday afternoon, possibly lingering through Saturday.

Flash flood warnings have been issued throughout the Guadalupe and Pedernales River Basins.
