The owners of Camp Mystic, a Christian all-girls summer camp in Texas, filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. The Eastland family filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which allows a company to restructure debts and assets while continuing to operate. The camp’s debt was listed at more than $10 million. Camp Mystic and its owners face several wrongful death lawsuits from families seeking over $1 million in damages over the July 4, 2025, flooding disaster. Two counselors and 25 young campers died in the floods, along with camp owner Dick Eastland.

The news came days after the Texas Legislature released a report summarizing findings of a probe into the disaster. Lawmakers concluded after months of investigation that the camp’s owners did not have an emergency plan for evacuation from cabins in case of flooding. The report also accused the camp’s owners of failing to properly plan for severe weather and evacuate cabins in a timely manner. If they had used a PA system to order everyone to evacuate, all campers and staff would have had enough time to reach higher ground safely, according to the report.

The Eastlands in April dropped plans to open one of their camp sites near the property that flooded, amid backlash from grieving families and the Texas Legislature’s investigation.
