Omar survives Democratic primary after other squad losses

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., late on Tuesday expressed her gratitude to Democratic voters for choosing her as their pick for the upcoming U.S. House race. She grabbed 56 percent of the vote while her main challenger Don Samuels nabbed just 43 percent, according to WORLD’s Election Center. Her victory comes after primary losses by other members of her so-called squad of young Democratic representatives who are critical of Israel. U.S. Reps. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., and Cori Bush, D-Mo., lost their primary elections this summer. One of the squad’s foremost members, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., won her primary.

What other states held primaries on Wednesday? Voters in Vermont, Wisconsin, and Connecticut also turned out to vote.

In Wisconsin, Eric Hovde claimed a resounding victory over two challengers in the GOP's primary for U.S. Senate. His general election opponent Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., ran unopposed in her primary.

In Connecticut’s five U.S. House districts, all five incumbent Democrats ran unopposed in their primaries. In the one Republican contested primary, entrepreneur Michael Goldstein narrowly won the Republican nomination over former financial executive Bob MacGuffie. Meanwhile, Senate candidate Matthew Corey, a Navy veteran and pub owner, won the Republican nomination over Gerry Smith, a local politician. Corey will challenge U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who was unopposed in the primary.

In Vermont, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., ran unopposed in the Democratic primary, as did his general election opponent, Republican Gerald Malloy. U.S. Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt., ran unopposed in the primary for U.S. House. Her general election challenger Democrat Mark Coester also ran unopposed.
