Oklahoma police arrest first suspect in fatal lakeside mass shooting
Officials arrested an 18-year-old in connection with the fatal shooting on Sunday night near Arcadia Lake, according to a Wednesday statement from local police. A shooting broke out during an unsanctioned party on Sunday night, which killed an 18-year-old girl and injured 22 others, according to a separate police statement.
Police initially arrested Jaylan Davis on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, but that charge is being upgraded to murder after Avianna Smith-Gray’s death, according to Edmond Police Chief J.D. Younger. Davis’ arrest is not the end of the case, just the latest development to report as investigators continue searching for other suspects tied to the shooting, Younger added.
What prompted the shooting? The incident began with a fight between two women that evolved into a much larger fight between rival gang members at the party, Younger said. Multiple people pulled out guns during the fight and shot a total of more than 80 rounds. The severity of gunshot wounds ranged from bullet penetration to shrapnel wounds, and six of the victims were juveniles as young as 15, he added.
What can police share about the other suspects? Police said they decided to withhold the descriptions of other suspects out of concern for local safety and the investigation’s integrity. Officials continue to investigate other suspects aside from Davis, he said.
