Oklahoma enacts groundbreaking protections for babies
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a bill Tuesday making it a felony to perform an abortion in the state, except to save the life of the mother. Under the law, anyone convicted of performing an abortion would face up to 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. The law does not authorize criminal charges against a woman for receiving an abortion. The bill takes effect 90 days after the Legislature adjourns next month.
Will it hold up in court? Pro-abortion activists have already vowed to challenge the law in court. Oklahoma lawmakers passed a separate bill last year to prevent women from ordering abortion pills online, but that measure was blocked by the Oklahoma Supreme Court. Pro-life advocates hope the U.S. Supreme Court will vacate the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion and allow individual states to regulate the practice.
