Ohio governor signs law protecting women’s bathrooms

Gov. Mike DeWine’s office on Wednesday confirmed that he signed into law a bill requiring all schools in the state to prevent male students from using women’s restrooms and vice versa. The law also applies to changing rooms, locker rooms, and shower rooms. It also applies to restrooms, locker rooms, and similar facilities in school buildings—or buildings used by schools for school-affiliated activities.

Does it offer any accommodation for families? The law prohibits schools from making or allowing multi-gender locker rooms and restrooms. Schools can still have single-occupancy restrooms and students can use them. The law also allows schools to provide family restrooms.

Dig deeper: Read my report in The Sift about how House Speaker Mike Johnson has promised to prevent men from using women’s restrooms on Capitol Hill.
