North Carolina lawmakers protect minors from transgender procedures, ideology
Lawmakers in the state House and Senate on Wednesday overrode Gov. Roy Cooper’s vetoes on three measures. The bills protect children under age 18 from receiving transgender procedures or cross-sex hormones, prohibit boys from participating in girls’ school sports, and ban gender ideology from being taught in kindergarten through fourth grade. Cooper vetoed the measures last month. All three laws took effect immediately on Wednesday.
Have other states implemented similar protections? At least 20 states have passed laws to protect children from transgender surgeries and drug regimens. Kentucky legislators in March overrode Gov. Andy Beshear’s veto of a bill to protect minors from similar surgeries and from being taught transgender ideas in schools. A federal judge later blocked part of the law.
