Republicans scramble to elect new House speaker nominee
House Republicans are expected to convene behind closed doors on Tuesday to try to elect a new nominee for speaker of the House. Republicans dropped their support for Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, after he failed to secure a majority vote on Friday in a third ballot for speaker of the House. The decision came after a closed-door conference vote Friday afternoon. Jordan lost more votes each time he took his bid to the House floor, with 25 Republican representatives voting against him by his third try.
Who might the new nominee be? Recently ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy has endorsed House Majority Whip Tom Emmer for the speakership. Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., and Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., are other potential nominees.
