New York prosecutors oppose dropping Trump conviction

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Tuesday said his office would oppose any efforts to dismiss its prosecution of President-elect Donald Trump. Bragg’s office argued that Acting New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan could still impose a sentence on Trump for a conviction he received before the country chose him to be its next president.

So what did Bragg recommend as the next step? Bragg’s office urged the court to set a schedule for hearing Trump’s motion to dismiss so the matter could be argued before the court. Bragg’s office argued that, because it deeply respected the office of the president, it would not be opposed to deferring the case until after Trump left the White House in 2029.
