New York police charge suspect in Long Island beach murders

A grand jury on Friday charged Rex Heuermann, 59, with murder in connection to three people who were killed during the early 2010s. Authorities discovered at least 10 sets of human remains on suburban Gilgo Beach roughly a decade ago. The cases have remained unsolved since then, but investigators recently reopened it with help from state police and the FBI.

Who is this suspect? Heuermann is a New York architect. He has lived for decades in Massapequa Park, near where the bodies were found. Police arrested him after linking DNA evidence from a pizza he ate to linking him to genetic material found on one of the bodies. He has pleaded not guilty and has been denied bail. He did not speak in court, but his lawyer told reporters that Heuermann told him, “I didn't do this.”
