NATO secretary general rallies conservative support for Ukraine

The Heritage Foundation hosted a talk with Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday, where the NATO secretary general strongly pushed for the United States to continue supporting Ukraine. Stoltenberg fought the assertion that European allies do not match American support, noting European countries have given roughly $100 billion in aid, as opposed to the United States’ $75 billion. As a share of countries’ gross domestic products, most European allies give more than the United States, he said. European countries also host millions of Ukrainian refugees. Stoltenberg said Russian allies like China and North Korea are watching how the United States defends its allies. “Supporting Ukraine is not a charity—it is an investment in our own security,” Stoltenberg said. “It is Ukraine today. Taiwan could be tomorrow.”

Did Stoltenberg say anything about the end of the war? When asked by an audience member, Stoltenberg said he believed the war would continue “as long as Putin believes that he can win on the battlefield.” The former Norwegian prime minister insisted that the only winning strategy is for Ukraine to “inflict so high costs on Russia that they accept that they will not control Ukraine.”
