More than 60 migrants feared dead after migrant boat capsizes
Senegal’s foreign ministry on Thursday said 38 people survived a capsized boat that originally carried more than 100. A Spanish fishing vessel rescued the survivors and found seven bodies aboard the capsized boat near the island of Cape Verde. Authorities believe the boat left Senegal on July 10.
How often is this sort of thing happening? Pope Francis on Sunday said that almost 2,000 people had died this year just trying to cross the Mediterranean. He mentioned that earlier this month, 41 people had died when a boat of migrants wrecked in the Mediterranean Sea. Almost 10,000 people have successfully crossed to the Canary Islands from northwest Africa this year, according to the Spanish Interior Ministry.
