Migrants leave New York for other states, Canada

New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Monday confirmed to Fox 5 (WNYW) that his administration is offering migrants free transportation out of the city to destinations of their choice. Adams said some immigrants want to relocate to other states, while many are looking to cross the border into Canada. Tens of thousands of migrants have arrived in the city in recent months. Colorado transported thousands of migrants out of Denver last month, a move Adams and Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot criticized as inhumane.

What is New York City doing to address immigration? The city has opened dozens of emergency shelters, including a new relief center in Red Hook’s Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. Adams slept at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal on Friday night to try to show it was good housing for migrants who were previously housed at hotels. Adams said the cost to handle immigrants is approaching $2 billion and he has requested state and federal emergency aid.
