Midwest flooding threatens crops, homes
Residents of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, evacuated parts of the city as the Cedar River swelled to an expected crest of 23 feet today. Heavy rains have caused flooding and widespread crop damage throughout Iowa and Wisconsin in recent days. Cedar Rapids constructed a temporary floodwall to protect homes and downtown buildings, and schools closed through Thursday in anticipation of the high water. A flood devastated the town in 2008, but city officials say they are better prepared this time.
