Mexico hands cartel leaders over to U.S. for trials

U.S. authorities took into custody a group of 26 cartel leaders and other fugitives, the Justice Department said on Tuesday. Mexico’s National Security authorities arrested and transferred the fugitives, according to Attorney General Pamela Bondi.

The group includes leaders and managers of the Sinaloa, Jalisco New Generation, and Noreste cartels. The fugitives face a variety of federal and state criminal charges for alleged crimes, including:

  • Extensive drug trafficking

  • Hostage-taking or kidnapping

  • Illegal firearm use

  • Human smuggling of thousands of illegal immigrants

  • Money laundering

  • The murder of a sheriff’s deputy

Have Mexican authorities made similar arrests recently? Mexican police arrested 27 members of the Jalisco New Generation cartel, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization, the State Department said on Tuesday. The Mexican authorities said that U.S. narcotics enforcement and the FBI trained them in the necessary skills to take down the criminals, according to the State Department.
